Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a research project take?
A great research project is very collaborative, so exact schedules depend on the client’s availability to approve key deliverables. A typical project takes about four to six weeks, although Dimensional has turned projects in as little as two weeks to meet urgent timelines and has been very flexible with clients that require more time to think through decisions.
Research project schedules include two stages:
- Design: In this stage we establish goals and prepare a first draft of the relevant materials: survey questions, participant profile, interview guide, message testing documents, and so on. We then cycle through feedback until the documents are approved. This stage is where a project can move faster or slower, depending on the client.
- Execution: Once everything is approved, Dimensional takes the lead and does our magic to field the research, capture the input, and write the analysis. This stage is far more predictable and typically takes about three weeks, depending on the details.
For companies using research to generate marketing assets, there will be additional time needed to write and design that material - either done internally or using Dimensional’s content offering services.
What does a research project cost?
Research costs are based on the number and type of participants and can vary significantly between projects. Research costs go up when the desired profile is very narrow, for example C-level participants, small countries that don’t speak English, emerging roles that do not exist in all organizations, use of specific types of technology, or certain industries.
Dimensional begins each new project by developing a proposal that includes a few options for conducting research so clients can clearly understand cost tradeoffs to reach their goals. We are always looking for ways to recommend possible tweaks on a project to deliver better value. Please contact us and tell us a bit about your ideal target research audience and we’d be happy to put together some pricing for you.
How can I be confident in the quality of research participants?
Dimensional is deeply committed to ensuring that we are reaching the target audience and can effectively answer the questions our research is posing. This is core to our culture, and we have baked best practices into every step of our methodology and operations.
- We maintain an inhouse database of participants that have been rigorously vetted to confirm people are who they say they are
- We track responses during surveys, focus groups, and interviews to identify changes in participant demographics and update their profiles to stay current
- We evaluate answers to surveys to ensure they make sense within the context of the study; we flag participants that speed through surveys without being thoughtful, give conflicting answers, or otherwise demonstrate that they are not paying attention
- We remove participants from future research if we determine they are being dishonest about their qualifications or not providing thoughtful answers
- We write great questions that keep participants thinking and engaged; this is critical for great research since a bored participant is a low-quality participant, and also ensures they continue to participate in future projects because they know it will inform their thinking and be worth their time
- We never ask questions that requires participants to give an answer that they do not want to or is false; there is always an option for an "I don't know" or "No opinion," which we flag for quality reviews to understand if a participant is not an expert in a subject or perhaps our question needs to be adjusted for the audience profile
- When a project requires that we look outside of our house list for participants, we take additional steps by working only with vendors that take quality very seriously, comparing responses against the known high quality answers of our house list, and taking extra steps to ensure responses are consistent
